Zimbabwe Tri-Nation Series, 2016

After the two-match Test series Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe take on each other in a Tri-Nation One-Day International (ODI) series, featuring West Indies as the third team. Under the captaincy of Rangana Herath, Sri Lanka registered two big Test wins. The visitors won the first Test by 257 runs and second match by 225 runs. Now under Upul Tharanga, the team will be looking for a similar success. However, with West Indies around things may not be that easy for Sri Lanka.

On International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Future Tours Programme (FTP) Sri Lanka were originally scheduled to play two Tests, three One-Day Internationals (T20Is) and one-off T20I. However, it was later changed to two Tests and tri-series. At one stage, Zimbabwe Cricket was even planning to scrap the Test series owing to financial constraints. Now as the Test series is over the focus is on 50-over format.

Total of seven matches will be played in this Tri-series, including the final. Teams will get to play each other twice. After the league stage, top two teams with most wins or points will play the final. The tournament will be played on two different venues- Harare Sports Club in Harare and Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Tharanga will lead the Sri Lankan side in absence of regular captain Angelo Mathews and vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal as both are currently nursing an injury. Kusal Perera will be Tharanga’s deputy. Sri Lanka have also recalled experienced seamer Nuwan Kulasekara. All-rounder Asela Gunaratne and pacer Lahiru Kumara, who both made their debuts earlier during the Test series, were also included in the ODI side.

Hosts have also retained batsman Tarisai Musakanda and fast bowler Carl Mumba from the Test side. Brian Chari, Tinashe Panyangara and Chris Mpofu are other names who return to Zimbabwe ODI side. The home side however has left out top-order batsman Vusi Sibanda from the squad.

West Indies, the third team in the Tri-series, have left out senior batsman Marlon Samuels from the squad owing to his poor form against Pakistan. Wicketkeeper-batsman Shane Dowrich was included in the ODI side for the first time after his decent performance against Pakistan. West indies have left out senior players Denesh Ramdin and Kieron Pollard as well. Fast bowler Miguel Cummins was drafted into the 15-member squad while young fast bowler Alzarri Joseph found no place.

The Tri-series kicks-off from November with hosts Zimbabwe taking on Sri Lanka in Harare. The final of the tournament will be played at Bulawayo on November 27.
